HVAC testing, adjusting and balancing in a Qatar building

What Is TAB, and Why Does Your Building Need It Before Handover?

TAB stands for Testing, Adjusting and Balancing. It is the process of measuring how much air and water is actually flowing through an HVAC system, and adjusting it so every room gets what the design asked for.

A new air conditioning system rarely works as designed straight after installation. Ducts are longer or shorter than drawn, dampers are left fully open, and pumps push too much water to some areas and too little to others. TAB corrects all of this.

Signs your building needs TAB

  • Some rooms are too cold while others never cool down
  • Occupants complain about drafts or noisy diffusers
  • Chillers and AHUs run hard but comfort is still poor
  • Electricity bills are higher than they should be
  • Doors whistle or slam because of pressure imbalance
  • After a fit-out, new partitions changed the layout but the AC was never re-balanced

What a TAB engineer measures and adjusts

  1. Air side: airflow at every AHU, FCU, fan and diffuser, adjusted with dampers until each matches the design.
  2. Water side: chilled water flow through each coil, pump and branch, adjusted with balancing valves.
  3. Fans and pumps: speed, current and pressure, so they run at the right point instead of wasting energy.
  4. Room pressures: important for kitchens, toilets, labs, clean rooms and hospitals, where air must flow in the right direction.
  5. Final report: every measured value against the design value, signed off for the consultant and client.

When TAB is required

  • New buildings, before testing and commissioning sign-off and handover
  • Fit-outs and renovations, whenever ducts, rooms or equipment change
  • Existing buildings with comfort complaints or high energy use
  • Life safety systems, such as smoke extract and stair pressurization, which also need measured airflow

Why choose a NEBB-certified TAB contractor

NEBB is an international certification for TAB firms and engineers. Consultants in Qatar often ask for a NEBB-certified report, because it means the instruments are calibrated and the procedure follows a recognised standard.

QATCO's engineers are NEBB certified. We cover offices, towers, malls, hotels and new fit-outs across Qatar, and deliver a full TAB report ready for handover. Read more about our ACMV and TAB services, or see how TAB improves building performance.
