Engineer testing stairwell pressurization before QCDD inspection

Stair Pressurization Testing: How to Pass Your QCDD Inspection First Time

In a fire, the stairwell is the escape route. A stair pressurization system pushes clean air into the stairwell so smoke stays out while people get down and firefighters get up.

In Qatar, this system is checked by the Qatar Civil Defence Department (QCDD) before a building gets its completion certificate, and again during periodic inspections. Many buildings fail the first time. Most failures are avoidable.

What the test checks

  • Pressure difference between the stairwell and the floor, with doors closed. Too low and smoke gets in.
  • Door opening force. Too much pressure and people, including children and the elderly, can't push the door open. NFPA 101 limits this to 133 N (about 13.5 kg of push).
  • Airflow through an open door, so smoke is pushed back when doors are open during evacuation.
  • Fan start-up on a fire alarm signal, and the correct response time.
  • Pressure relief working, so pressure doesn't build up too high when doors close.
  • Power and controls, including standby power and the fire fighter's override panel.

The 6 most common reasons buildings fail

  1. Doors that don't close properly. Missing door closers, damaged seals or doors wedged open.
  2. Unsealed openings in the stair walls, such as cable and pipe penetrations left open after fit-out.
  3. Fan not balanced. The fan was installed but never adjusted to the design airflow.
  4. Pressure relief damper stuck or set wrong, so door force is far too high.
  5. Wrong cause-and-effect. The fan doesn't start on alarm, or starts on the wrong signal.
  6. No test report. The system may work, but there's no proper measured report to show the inspector.

How QATCO prepares your building

We do a full pre-inspection test, the same way QCDD will test it. We measure pressure, door force and airflow on every floor and record the results. Then we fix what fails: adjusting fans and dampers, sealing gaps and correcting control settings. You receive a clear test report ready for the inspector.

Our engineers are NEBB and NFPA certified, and QATCO is a QCDD-certified company. See our ACMV and TAB services.

Book a test before the inspector does
